An 8.9 earthquake followed by a catastrophic tsunami and a death toll that continues to rise has brought absolute horror for the Japanese people. The tsunami has crippled most Japanese cities and brought with it a terror all too familiar. The threat of nuclear devastation from multiple failing nuclear reactors at the Fukishima Daiitchi nuclear plant has unleashed waves of fear along with the grim reminder of similar fears from a dark day in history.
For the gracious and honorable Japanese people life has brought so many horrors, among those being August 6th and 9th, 1945 when another nuclear nightmare came from the skies above as the final act of World War 2 was carried out.
Two atomic bombs were dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki leaving Japan in ruins and facing the horror of nuclear radiation and its aftermath, much like today only this time from the ground instead of the sky. Not an act of war but instead the harsh reality of a violent earth.
Not one of us could begin to imagine the absolute fear that must grip those who remember 1945 as they were already faced with the devastating earthquake and deadly tsunami, but imagine the gut wrenching terror of hearing warning sirens from a nuclear plant and knowing that those same fears from so many years ago have returned from your home ground.
We can only hope that a nuclear catastrophe can be avoided and further tragedy for the wonderful Japanese people can be avoided, and with our prayers another; that one time in Japan’s history, the nightmares will stop.
